Today’s Reflection: Happiness Is…

This week’s photo challenge gave us a brief  opportunity for a “free for all,” whatever inspires you subject. I read several posts and enjoyed the amazing images under the theme “Reflection.” The first thing that popped in my mind is the daily reflection I experience each and very day.

Today, I kept on thinking, “What makes me happy?” It’s an easy question. So many answers. So many choices. Some are simple while others are complex. A few, a bit weird and almost fictional. But they are in their humble and pure sense, makes me smile even on a dark, gloomy day. So, I decided to check my photo archives to see which photos reminded me of a happy memory. Here goes.

Happiness is…

A day with my wife, holding her hand as we walk on a white sand beach with crystal clear waters. As we stare at the horizon, we get to share our Island dreams with the Sun humming the lyrics, “Love is in the air.”

To hear my son laugh generously as we play “Beyblade” spinners and “Nerf blaster” games. To see him looking so excited as he build his favorite Lego Star Wars and Ninjago.  To see him run so happy and free as he greets the sea’s playful waves. To see him create a sand castle filled with bright and hopeful childhood dreams.

To be one with nature, undisturbed from any chaotic and stressful life. Just drifting into a place of calmness and peace as the swaying motion of the hammock relaxes all sorts of body aches. Every now and then, I get to wake up, and I could see the coconut leaves gently dancing with the music of the soothing Sea. And yes, I get to have lots of wonderful dreams. Dreams as far as my imagination will take me.

To spend another day with my parents, specially my mom so I can tell her in person how much I love her and appreciate her generous heart. To greet her in person a “Happy Mother’s Day” while I give her a warm hug and a kiss.

Unforgettable Sunday street market visits with my mom. My sisters and I would tag along excitedly. We get to buy and eat the delicious “Bibingka” or rice cake before heading home. I miss these moments.

Thanks for sharing my day’s reflection. I hope you enjoyed dreaming with me. I hope it brought you to a place that gave you a happy memory.

Before the day is over, as a form of mental exercise, ask yourself, “What makes me happy?” Then close your eyes and let yourself drift to that place. Chances are you’ll be smiling with a joyful glow on your face before you could even open your eyes.

  3. Indeed, what is happiness? So many people are in search of the meaning of this word in their life and after travelling and researching til madness reaches them, they at last that happiness lies in the smallest things we already have in life. Happiness is to see a smile, to breathe fresh air, to wake up every morning thinking that you’re still alive and you’re being offered a new day, for new beginnings. 🙂

    • Thank you my friend. If only we truly open our eyes and heart, there’s so much beauty and goodness around us. Instead on focusing on the bad and the negative stuff, life would be better if we nurture each good thing, small or huge. If we all do just that, wouldn’t this world be amazing?

A lot of what makes me happy would be similar to yours – spending time with my family (husband, children, parents), being outside – and yes, sometimes having time to myself 🙂

    • Thanks Georgette. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we have a time each day just to chill on a hammock? As it sways, our aches and problems drifts away back to the ocean, and the sea breeze brings back a healed, renewed , vigorous soul ready to tackle just about anything.

    • I do. I usually tell my friends, ” I am rich because of the people who loves me and whom I love dearly. I will always have problems and bills to pay but in my heart, blessings are measured not by material wealth but how much people I have in my life who will journey with me even through my darkest moments.” It is when we have nothing materially that we will find out who are our “real” friends and family are. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed weekend.

    • Thanks Jake . The best part of being in Manila is that you’re just a few hours from the beautiful beaches of places like Batanggas or the pristine view of Taal lake. Savor the beauty of our country. People there sometimes don’t realize how lucky they are.

  13. Great insight into your “happy places”. As for me, lately (and whenever I get stressed due to work, etc.) I have been going to my “happy place” like favorite memories of love. As the first thing you mentioned bringing you happiness, love definitely equates with happiness!

    • Love does equates happiness, perhaps even more. Like you, when things get tough and rough, I just close my eyes for a moment, take a deep breath, and try to go to a happy memory that made me laugh, smile or feel loved. Most of the times, when I open my eyes, everything seems to be better. Thanks Frances. Have a blessed weekend.

    • Thank you Yen. I appreiciate the generous comment. I needed to seek as much happy moments with my family as I can. There was a time when my trials in life kept pulling me down but now I try to embrace the positive and happy side of things. We can’t let hardships bring us down. Being happy is a matter of choice. And we all deserve to be happy.

  22. Your descriptions are always very fascinating. I love street markets. They are my favorite places to visit when I travel. The traditional foods are sold there. I enjoy reading all of your posts. They are always so positive and uplifting. I can close my eyes and think many beauitful thoughts. We should all have those thoughts throughout our day so we can say when night falls – “It has been a good day”.

    • Thanks Isadora. I agree totally when you wrote, ” We should all have those thoughts throughout our day so we can say when night falls – “It has been a good day”. And a good day we all shall have! Every Sunday during my vacation last March , my parents and my siblings would go to the street market. So fun, colorful, a vision of life and reality that I haven’t seen for so many years. I never realized how much I miss it. There’s joy in having a simple and humble life. And the street market reminded me of all that.

      • AND … the welcoming feeling the street market vendors always have. They are truly happy to see you and give you a taste of whatever they are selling to let you know their products are fresh and tasty. None of that in a big supermarket. Yes … the simple things in life can be very special indeed.
        Blessings …..
