Their Stars Shine Bright Across The Universe

Miss Universe 2012: Where The Most Beautiful Stars Meet And Shine Like No Other

Just several days ago, both their countries were mourning for an unimaginable loss and tragedy but last night, their countrymen had a reason to smile and cheer.

89 amazing, talented and beautiful women shone like stars across the universe. 16 were chosen to mesmerize the crowd which eventually narrowed to 5. When the last 2 were called, I already knew who was going to win. Both stars gave hope to many who needed to feel joy and hope that night. ( (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

Normally, my son doesn’t watch shows like this. He would rather play with his toys, draw or watch his favorite Disney T.V. series but last night when he heard that Ms. U.S.A. entered the top 16 in this year’s Ms. Universe competition held in Las Vegas, he sat between me and his mom with all eyes and ears.

The top five were , Miss Brazil, Gabriela Markus; Miss USA, Olivia Culpo; Miss Australia, Renae Ayris; Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon; and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero. This year’s Ms. Universe showed that inner beauty glows more that what meets the eye. Congratulations judges. Great job! ((AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

He kept cheering, “U.S.A, U.S.A.” While me and his mom were cheering for Ms. Philippines. Living in the Philippines for most of our lives, me and my wife still has that nostalgic spirit of the country where most of our happy memories were created but my son who was born in California is 100% all American. I was impressed by his sense of patriotism. I didn’t realize that my 7-year old can pretty much decide what he likes and where his heart belongs.

We were nervous when it was time for the “Question and Answer” portion. This is where precious diamonds are separated from the rest of the sparkling gems. Of the last five, I thought Ms. Australia Renae Ayris, Ms. Philippines  Janine Tugonon and Ms. U.S.A. Olivia Culpo’s answer were the best. It was now up for the judges to make the final call.

The crowd was so silent you can almost hear the contestant’s heartbeat. Then the Ms. Universe for 2012 was announced. The crowd cheered wildly as the name Olivia Culpo of U.S.A. echoed in the most inspiring way.

We need to thank Santa too. Mr. Donald Trump. He made it all possible. It is Christmas after all and what can be more wonderful than the gift of “Joy.” (REUTERS/Valerie Macon/Miss Universe Organization L.P.)

My son told us as he cheered, “I won!” Smiling, I replied, “Yes, you did. She is beautiful. Well deserved.” I told my wife, “It feels good that she won. America needed it. We needed it. Her star shines the brightest to inspire us all.”

Two women shining brightly from two totally different sides of the world standing next to each other, chosen to inspire a nation grieving from the recent tragedies that befall them. Was it coincidence? Was it fate? I would like to believe, it happened for a reason. After all, we can’t argue with the universe and its decisions, right?

A smile you just don’t forget. A smile that seems to say, “It’ll be okay.” (Photo by David Becker/Getty Images)

Congratulations to the winners. You all made us happy and proud. Thanks for making us smile and applaud with joy today.

For those who missed it last night, here’s one of the highlights from NBC .

I’m proud to be pinoy! Congrats to the winner and of course congrats to Janine!

    • Me too. Somehow we are blessed to be in the top6 for the past few years. Perhaps next year. To all “kababayans” who know anyone who have the beauty and heart to dazzle the universe recruit them please. We need to keep inspiring our countrymen during this time of hardships.Thanks.

What a lovely, happy story. I can just imagine your son sitting there, cheering Ms USA on to 1st place. Congrats to all the winners. They are indeed beautiful. 🙂

  5. Angeline M says:

I totally believe the Universe arranged this as a small bit of atonement for the tragedies in both countries.
Your son has a good eye in picking the winner 🙂

  6. Ms. U.S.A. is absolutely beautiful — as were all the other contestants I saw last night. But I’m thrilled that U.S.A. won.

I haven’t watched that show in many, many years. A friend called me to say i should watch it as Ms America and Ms Philippines were likely to win… They did make it… 🙂

    • God has a reason for letting things happen. I thought it was fate that led the judges to choose them. I made so much heart happy that night. Happiness we need during this sad times. Thanks.

Congrats to Miss USA for winning the Miss Universe this year. It was too close for the Philippines, so congrats to Janine Tugonon too, well deserved!

Somehow the universe conspires to comfort the hearts broken from the recent tragedies befalling both countries… All the best to all the winners!

From my family to yours, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year with special mention to the families, friends, relatives of the victims of the recent shooting in Newtown, CT – it must be very hard for them to celebrate Christmas without their little ones… 😦

    All the best bro!

  12. pinkpodster says:

This is the one pageant that I actually like because I’ve always like seeing all the representations of beauty from other countries. I love seeing the native costumes / ensembles for each.

The one thing that continues to bug me is that if this is supposed to showcase beauties of the universe, how come there are never representatives from Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Neptune or Uranus? 😉

  13. Tammy says:

This post really has legs – meaning that if you save it and extend it, it will chronicle a great family interaction and is a powerful story. Merry Christmas!

  14. Sunshine says:

How delightful. I enjoyed your story on your family evening with a few of the beautiful women in the world. 🙂
    Merry Christmas!

  15. ristinw says:
