Humble Beginnings
Growing up in a colorful tropical island as a child surrounded by lush vegetation, turquoise blue waters, sun-kissed happy people inspired me to dream that one day I will become an artist who can capture the beauty of nature and its dwellers on a blank canvas.
As I got older, the dream evolves into something else as my priority changes. Every now and then, I still yearn to create when inspiration knocks at my door.
It was a tough time in my country. Much as it’s blessed with natural resources and skilled professionals, it’s still a part of the third world. It was a time of political unrest on the brink of a revolution due to oppression and dictatorship that spanned an agonizing 20 years.
My parents told me that the only wealth they can give me and my siblings was education.Back then the only profession that gives you a chance to go abroad and make a name for yourself was nursing. Half of my class did the same. It was a beginning of a journey in the medical profession that led me to where I am today.
I thought that after nursing I was done with books. I found out later that there were more learning to follow, in fact tons of it when fate led me to study medicine.
My parents were proud and jubilant. I guess it was part of their dream. Me, I just went with the flow although there were times when I wanted to give up. In the end I made it.
I thought studying was the hardest part until it was time for residency training. I went to the big City and tried my luck.
Being a country boy who’s been sheltered for most of his existence, life in the big city was undeniably difficult. A lot of times I just felt miserable. I said to myself, “life is meant to be more than this.” And I was right.

Malls like this provides refuge from the heat as well as a form of diversion from the hardships of life.
The Path We Take
Fate led me to choose another path. At this point, another bloodless revolution was happening in my country. I was convinced that I needed to go abroad so I can help my family. This led me to a dream, a dream I didn’t realize will come sooner than I could comprehend what I really wanted in my life.
The Call That Opened A Door For Me
I was in my sleep when around 02:00 A.M. , a recruiter from the United States called and said that he saw my application in the internet. He said that if I’m interested, an employer was willing to hire me. I thought it was a prank but 2 days later, I got the job. I can’t believe that finally I will have a chance to travel the other side of the world. I was on cloud 9.

When I left my hometown I didn’t realize how much I would miss sceneries like this. Life was simple, uncomplicated. You could be happy without the latest electronic gadgets, cars or big elaborate houses.

I can be anywhere in the world but the memories , experiences, the thoughts about family , the rich cultural heritage and traditions will always be a part of me.
Everyone Has A love Story To Tell, Here’s Mine…
If there is one thing or person that made medicine worth sacrificing for, it was meeting my wife. She is that one person who journeyed with me at the lowest points of my life.
I was on my third year medicine when I saw her, a freshman. I thought she was and still is the most beautiful girl on campus. My heart would pound so hard that I could hear it whenever we cross our ways in the library or at the stairway. It took another year before I had the guts to call her with the help of a friend.
Our worlds are totally different. She belonged to a well to do family in her city whereas I’m a simple guy raised in an average middle-income family .While she was eating an expensive sushi, I was eating street food that fits my allowance.
Like all fairy tales, destiny intervened and led us to be together. When my lawyer sent me a notice that I’m leaving in less than a year, I asked her to marry me and she said yes. I was the happiest man in the world.
We had a simple, solemn church wedding in a small chapel. I still can’t believe that it was all happening, that she chose me and was willing to give up everything because she loved me. I felt like I’m watching myself on t.v. only it was all real.

The woman whose love, patience and support gave me strength to endure my everyday struggles. She gave meaning to my existence.
We spent a lot of memorable days at the paradise-like island where I worked for a year. I thought then that I got the job because I was needed to help the sick but only to realize later that It was the island’s spirit that was healing me from all forms of emptiness. The island brought back my sense of bliss and harmony.
The Island That Gave Me Refuge And Comfort
At one point in my life I felt lost, confused and restless. My sojourn in the island, knowing its residents and the friends I came across with all helped in finding myself once again.
I would walk each morning at the break of dawn along the sea-shore, the beach empty, peaceful and hopeful as the cool waters and fine sugary white sand caressed my feet. Sometimes I would just stare at the sea while sipping a cup of coffee . I would empty my mind so I can truly listen to what’s important in my life. I found my serenity and it was beautiful.

The last sunset before I left the place that gave me refuge and sense of well-being. Part of me didn’t wish to leave paradise.
Living The So Called “American Dream”
I moved to the U.S. in 2003. Another journey I made with my wife. We started in a small city in California, with lots of amazing and generous people. I made a lot of good friends there who to this day I still value and cherish.
A few years later, we transferred to the vibrant bay area, close to the famous San Francisco. We had good memories there but we also had a lot of hardships from a horrible experience of being scammed by a person whom we considered as our family. The only thing that kept us going was the birth of our son. He’s our gift from heaven. He brought us so much joy. He made us forget the pains of deceit. All I could say is ” Thank you God for giving us our little Angel.” His smile, giggles, butterfly kisses and hugs washed our heartaches away. He was our blessing.
I learned the hard way that America is not all milk and honey. That there’s a price for every dream , a tear for every dollar you wish for.

The best thing that ever happened to me and my wife is having our son. He brought as so much joy. His laughter and loud voice fills the entire house. He is curious to just about anything.
At a time when my wife and I felt alone in a world totally new to us, a friend invited us to the cowboy country of Texas. Right then and there we found our next home. Another path was made for us, giving us hope that a new beginning is possible. It was a time to heal, forgive and forget. It was a time to start a new leaf. It was a time to find peace , love and happiness. To be free of fear and helplessness. The rest is history and a new journey begins.

Each of these footsteps was made by one individual with his/her own path to take. Among those footsteps were mine directing me to a constantly changing path. I don’t know where it ends but I’m hoping it’s a place of love, peace and happiness. I’m hoping that it will finally lead me home.
Thank you for being a part of “this man’s journey.” Each traveled path had been wonderful because you shared those walks with me through your posts, visits and comments.
There may be times when our paths are somewhat dark, difficult , perhaps evens cold but those paths we no longer walk alone. Those paths we walk together with the people we love . Every walk is now a shared path with sense and meaning.

Thanks for sharing your heartfelt story. I hope that you are adjusting to your “new life” here in the US. Your hometown photos are so beautiful. I especially love the simplicity of your culture. Also, I can so empathize with your “caged bird” photo. Sadly, that bird will probably never have a chance to be free, but how do any of us have a chance for happiness without freedom? Anyway, your cultural experiences must have been truly amazing. Simple and uncomplicated sounds so refreshing!! Much happiness to you and your family.

Thank you. That was one comforting response. The first year was hard. Then there was a time that I thought that I’m already adjusted and I felt that I will stay here for a long time but lately, the calling of home seems so strong, it gets to be painful and frustrating sometimes. Part of me is here but a part of it still longs for that other side of the world. I didn’t have much then financially but my life was simple and peaceful. I miss that and so as being with my aging folks. I guess life is a never ending struggle of sorts. I’m still fortunate though that I have my family to support me and just be a pillar of strength when I feel low. God Bless you and your family. I wish you all the best in life.

Your “About me” page is huge! I mean, you had a descriptive detail of your life. I may consider placing something extra in mine about the fact that my dad is in the Air Force and that I move every four years. The problem is, I used to have that on my YouTube account and my mom got mad because it has nothing to do with me. Also, the fact and I was talking about his rank was a bad thing to do in terms of privacy. Others could be reading that, and stalkers could end up reading it too. As a result, I kept my “about me” clean and simple.
Now I’ve got a question, because I’m still new to WordPress. Should my “about” part of my profile be about the website, or should it be just a long, detailed description of the “About me” statement (which is shown on each blog entry)? Typically, if there is an “About” menu that is given, isn’t it normally about the website? Businesses do that so that’s why I did it that way. I just did it by the book. You know what I mean?
LikeLike
The way I interpret it, The ” About” part is about you, a background of yourself, something that makes the blog more personal. I usually read the “about” of the other bloggers who I have a consistent communication. It’s a good way to know them. Some would even put their names and it’s really up to you. The profile, I just placed a general description about me or what the blog is about. You can always change it as your blog evolves into what you want it to be. You could talk about your dad but not about his personal details or information ( for privacy purposes). People blog for various reasons. I do it cause I love writing, photography, It helps me connect to my roots, to discover myself in a different level, to learn about the other bloggers thoughts and inspiration in life, as an outlet of my reflections, to preserve memories of my family. The list can be endless. You can be whoever you want to be. It’s your blog. Have fun with it.

Memories are powerful in creating that spark we all once see and felt during those days of courtship. Trials can test a bond but love conquers all. At first your blog’s name intrigued me since I am an island person. Then I came to your blog and began to read some of the posts. I love your soul. Sincerity comes off the screen. I am so sorry that you and your family were betrayed. It is one of the most difficult demons to deal with – especially when the disappointing relationship included trust.
I read your comment that you hope to have a clinic one day to help people when you have the time and means to do so. I feel confident you do that with every encounter now… Sometimes when we have no other gift but to quell fear, no other gift could top it.

Thank you my new found friend. Life has been very interesting for me. It’s like walking on a cobblestone path. It has been both rough and smooth, happy and sad, triumphant and struggling. It’s perhaps any travelers story. A story of dreams, hopes , of loss, of the longings once you left everything that was familiar to you so you can venture into a world that might might give you a better life. No matter the outcome will or where that road finally ends, it’s a path to celebrate and be grateful for.

Hi Mr B! I got intrigued when you mentioned in your comment on my blog that you’re from the medical field and so I had to check out “the path” and now I understand. Honestly, you guys inspire me. When I read your journey, I feel that I’m no longer alone. People don’t realize how much we gave up to follow that dream. And those dreams are not always about happy endings. We have our share of tears, of lonely nights, of missing a part of our past, our family that we can never get back as soon as we rode that plane that brought us to our destination of dreams. Good thing we have our spouses and kids to gives us hope and love each day. Yes, the journey we make never fails to bring those thrilling and memorable surprises. God bless you and your love ones always….

I’ve been taking care of the sick for so many years and I was once sickly myself and I know hard it can be. There is hope in this world even if the pessimist things differently. In fact I’m still learning everyday. But I met a lot of supportive blogger friends and till today, I read their old comments and I smile knowing there are good people out there. A lot in fact. So that gives me hope and I’m just paying forward that same goodness. The world will be a better place if we give more and think of others other than ourselves. For 2013, my wish is that we all join hands around the world and make a difference.

Like you I have wonderful friends some for over 30 years and longer and we trusted each other right from the beginning, yes it does make you a victim sometimes but the benefits outweigh the this.
Just be yourself island traveler, your a V.N.P and that is very special indeed, you touch lives and leave beautiful memories, thank you.

Greetings from Australia,
I was really touched by your journey in life; it seems through adversity that your mind heart and soul have reached a beautiful place to be. There are indeed many challenges in life, and I believe those of good heart and pure disposition will always suffer in some way. Nevertheless, suffering and joy can coexist together if one chooses to see beauty in whatever situation they find themselves, wherever they may be. It seems to me that you are one such person. 🙂
God bless you and your family

you portray your story beautifully in words. may be i don’t come from the same country as yours, but i understand your perspective about leaving the hometown you love for a better life changes since i also come from a 3rd world country. i don’t do nursing. but i have friends, acquaintances doing nursing school overseas, from holland, england, sweden and other developed countries. it’s a high demand job, so it’s more possible to get out from their own country. your story represent one of the millions who have the same dream. some made it, some don’t.
i was also overseas for a years for studying, and trying to find a job. yet i didn’t succeed. i thought, if it doesn’t work, perhaps God has another plan, a bigger plan for you. well, i still don’t know God’s plan for me, though. but i still keep searching for the answers.
regardless, i’m glad you’ve made it and built a family you love the most. thanks for visiting and following my blog!
i wonder where you originally come from. is it the phillipines? cheers!

Thank you for a generous comment. God does works in mysterious ways. Some dreams comes sooner, others longer. I would like to believe it happens for a very important reason. Before leaving for the U.S., I was in a hurry to do so but now I wished I stayed longer and savored every moment with my parents and sisters. Perhaps one day, the tides will change and I will once bask under the tropical Sun’s happy days. God bless.
